NYBFW - What is it? From History til Now
Unraveling the Threads of Time: A Journey Through the History of New York Fashion Week
(Contains coupon at the end.)
Dear Esteemed Sewists,
Welcome back to our monthly newsletter! This time, we're taking a step back in time to explore the rich tapestry of history that has shaped one of the most iconic events in the fashion world - New York Fashion Week.
I think it's important to understand NYFW to understand what New York Bridal Fashion Week has become.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW), formerly known as Press Week, is a celebration of creativity, style, and innovation in the world of fashion. It's a time when designers, models, and fashion enthusiasts from around the globe come together to showcase the latest trends. As experienced seamstresses, you're sure to appreciate the intricate details and craftsmanship behind these fabulous creations.
The Birth of an Icon: 1943
NYFW was born in 1943, during a time when fashion in America was undergoing a transformation. As World War II raged on, Parisian fashion shows were inaccessible to American designers and buyers. To address this, Eleanor Lambert, a prominent fashion publicist, organized the "Press Week" event. It was a groundbreaking move, allowing American designers to showcase their creations on the runway and assert their independence in the global fashion scene.
The Evolution: 1950s to 1980s
Throughout the 1950s, NYFW grew in stature, and its focus shifted from presenting American copies of Parisian designs to promoting homegrown talent. Legendary designers like Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, and Geoffrey Beene made their debuts, shaping the future of American fashion.
The 1970s and 1980s saw an explosion of creativity and diversity. Punk and street fashion influenced the runway, and designers like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren achieved worldwide recognition. The couturiers, the mavericks, and the minimalist designers of this era all contributed to NYFW's vibrant history.
The Digital Revolution: 21st Century
As we fast forward to the 21st century, technology has played a significant role in how NYFW unfolds. Social media and live streaming brought the runway to the screens of millions around the world, revolutionizing the way we experience fashion week.
Fashion Week Today
Today, NYFW continues to be a global stage for both established designers and emerging talents. It's a platform for diversity and inclusivity, embracing sustainability and innovation. In recent years, we've seen a shift towards more seasonless and see-now-buy-now models, which you may find particularly interesting as seamstresses.
Here's a really good photo gallery about fashion weeks. It's also where I found the above pictures.
Now… let's take a step back in time to explore the enchanting history of New York Bridal Fashion Week (NYBFW), a celebration of beauty, love, and the art of crafting timeless elegance.
The Early Days: 1990s
New York Bridal Fashion Week traces its roots to the early 1990s when bridal fashion designers felt the need for a dedicated platform to showcase their exquisite creations. The first editions were intimate gatherings, often hosted in private showrooms, and exclusively attended by industry insiders. This marked the beginning of a journey that would soon evolve into a bridal fashion spectacle.
Growth and Glamour: 2000s
As we ventured into the new millennium, NYBFW grew exponentially. With an increasing number of designers recognizing its significance, it transitioned from private showcases to grand runway presentations. This transformation made NYBFW a focal point for both established and emerging bridal designers, creating an ambiance of opulence and sophistication.
The Emergence of Trends: 2010s
The 2010s brought exciting changes to NYBFW. With the proliferation of social media, designers were able to connect with a global audience like never before. This allowed for immediate visibility of trends and the rapid dissemination of bridal fashion inspiration, contributing to the event's growing prominence.
Personally, I like to watch NYBFW so that I know what trends and designs I will be working on the following year.
The fashion weeks happen about a month apart. For instance, this year, Fall NYFW was Sept 7th-13th, and NYBFW was Oct 10th-13th.
Did you know, as a designer, you can register and pay --just like any other bridal vendor, to bring your fashions to market during BFW?
You can!
Look into the different bridal markets that are happening that week and see which one is the best fit for you. Check out One Fine Day Bridal Market @onefinedaybridalmarket .
One of the ladies in our community, Fran, from Sew Glorious Creations, ( @sewgloriouscreations ) debuted her veil designs at the Horizon Bridal Market ( @HorizonBridal ) this year.
Congrats, Fran!
If New York isn't your thing, there are big markets also in Atlanta, Chicago, and LA twice a year as well. Have fun!!
Today, NYBFW stands as a symbol of diversity and sustainability. Bridal gown designers are championing inclusivity, embracing designs that cater to a variety of body shapes, cultures, and traditions. Many are also prioritizing sustainability, using eco-friendly materials and ethical practices to reduce the environmental impact of bridal fashion.
You can check in with CFDA, (Council of Fashion Designers of America) for dates of fashion weeks, also photos and editorial information.
As we reflect on the evolution of NYBFW, we encourage you to consider the ways in which this event has influenced your work as bridal gown designers and seamstresses. Its commitment to elegance, tradition, and innovation continues to inspire us all.
